The villains

The Sinister Six: every original member, explained

In 1964, Doctor Octopus decided Spider-Man could not be beaten alone. Six of his worst enemies have been coming back together ever since. Here is who they are, where they started, and how they rate.

The team that started it

The Sinister Six first came together in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 (1964), by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Doctor Octopus, tired of losing, gathered five other villains Spider-Man had already beaten and proposed that they finish him together. Their egos got in the way: rather than attack as a team, they lined up to fight him one at a time, and Spider-Man beat each of them in turn.

The idea outlived the plan. A team of one hero's enemies, working together, has become one of the most copied ideas in comics, and the Sinister Six have returned in dozens of lineups since, sometimes with seven or more members.

The original six

  1. Doctor Octopus

    First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #3 (1963) · Spider-Man wins 55%

Otto Octavius, a nuclear physicist whose four mechanical arms were fused to his body in a lab accident. The founder and usual leader of the Six, the first villain to beat Spider-Man in a fight, and later the Superior Spider-Man.

  2. Vulture

    First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #2 (1963) · Spider-Man wins 85%

Adrian Toomes, an elderly engineer whose flight harness also makes him far stronger than he looks. Michael Keaton played him in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

  3. Electro

    First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #9 (1964) · Spider-Man wins 55%

Max Dillon, a lineman struck by lightning who can generate and throw electricity. Jamie Foxx played him twice.

  4. Kraven the Hunter

    First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #15 (1964) · Spider-Man wins 55%

Sergei Kravinoff, a big-game hunter enhanced by jungle potions who wants Spider-Man as his greatest trophy. His obsession produced Kraven's Last Hunt, often called the best Spider-Man story of all.

  5. Mysterio

    First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #13 (1964) · Spider-Man wins 75%

Quentin Beck, a film special-effects artist who uses illusions, gas and stagecraft to make Spider-Man doubt his own senses. Jake Gyllenhaal played him in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

  6. Sandman

    First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #4 (1963) · Spider-Man wins 55%

Flint Marko, a criminal whose body turned to living sand. The most sympathetic of the six, he has reformed more than once. Thomas Haden Church played him in Spider-Man 3 and No Way Home.

Can Spider-Man beat all six at once?

In the comics, he never had to: in 1964 they took turns. On this site, the classic Peter Parker Spider-Man beats the original six fighting together 16% of the time, and wins all six fights one after another 6% of the time. The stronger versions do better: Cosmic Spider-Man wins 48% against the whole team, and Superior Spider-Man (Otto Octavius) wins 17%. Try any combination in the Sinister Six calculator.

Later lineups

The team has rarely kept the same members for long. Over the decades its ranks have included the Hobgoblin, the Rhino and the Chameleon among many others, along with spinoffs such as the Sinister Twelve and the Savage Six. In the 2010s, Doctor Octopus's own Superior Six were his former teammates under his mind control, working as heroes.

On screen

All six original members have now been in live-action films, but never together. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) came closest, with Doctor Octopus, Electro and Sandman alongside the Green Goblin and the Lizard. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) openly set up a Sinister Six film that was never made. The animated Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994–98) put a version of the team on TV, and the 2018 Marvel's Spider-Man game made them its central threat. Full details in the movie guide.
